The Herdsmen Crisis: A Lesson for Akwa Ibom and Beyond

Image
Let me be crystal clear from the very outset. I absolutely and in no uncertain terms condemn all herdsmen attacks on INNOCENT Nigerians. But the operative word here is 'innocent'. I have ABSOLUTELY no sympathy whatsoever for the people of Benue State, especially the Tivs, in their current well deserved travails in the hands of Fulani herdsmen. And before anyone attempts to come here and cry more than the bereaved, be informed that the recent history of Tiv treachery and tribalism precludes them from any genuine sympathy. My favourite Jamaican proverb says that 'what sweet nanny goat, it a-go run im belly'. Roughly translated, it says that he who brings in ant infested wood must be prepared for the visit of lizards. Are we this forgetful? Lest we forget, before Muhammadu Buhari and his fellow APC bigots came to power in 2015, Fulani herdsmen atrocities were unknown in Nigeria. Boko Haram, itself a brain child of the current APC Vice President, an ethnic acolyte of that s...

PDP IS 100% INTACT, UNSHAKEN -Publicity Secretary

Image
To the esteemed members and supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State, it is with utmost respect and sincerity that I address you today. Following the June 6, 2025, defection, our party faithful have eagerly awaited our response. We appreciate the concern and loyalty that have characterized your wait. As prudent stewards of our party's legacy and future, we deemed it wise and strategic to first engage in comprehensive internal consultations. This deliberate approach allowed us to convene with our party structure and stakeholders, ensuring alignment and informed decision-making before issuing any public statement.  To this end, we embarked on a meticulous series of meetings, starting with our State Working Committee, followed by the Party Executive Committee (EXCO), Chapter Chairmen, and Ward Chairmen across the three Senatorial Districts of Eket, Ikot Ekpene, and Uyo. Additionally, we held a crucial meeting with the staff of the party secretariat, t...

POLITICS: THE ENO/AKPABIO GRANITE COALITION

Image
By Inemesit Ina It was Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), the Presidential Candidate of the now defunct All Nigeria Peoples' Party (ANPP) for the 2007 election, who first used the term, "Granite Coalition."  He used it to describe the working alliance between him and his counterpart in the now defunct Action Congress (AC), then Vice President Atiku Abubakar (Atiku did not start coalition politics today). They were contesting against the standard bearer of the ruling Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP), then Governor Umaru Yar'Adua of Katsina State. Yar'Adua won the election but, by his admission, it was characterised by irregularities. Hence, his election reform initiative as President. Borrowing Buhari's term, a Granite Coalition has been put in place in Akwa Ibom. But in sharp contrast to that of Buhari and Atiku, which fell apart before the election, the one in Akwa Ibom, midwifed by Governor Umo Eno and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, looks rock so...

DEFECTION: PDP IS INTACT - STATE CHAIRMAN

Image
The political atmosphere was charged with subtle tension on Sunday at the headquarters of Believers Assembly, Uyo, as the Akwa Ibom State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Aniekan Akpan, publicly declared that the party remains unshaken despite Governor Umo Eno’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Speaking during the church’s 55th anniversary celebration, Akpan fired a thinly veiled shot at the Governor, stating emphatically: “The PDP in Akwa Ibom is intact.” The event, which had Governor Eno in attendance, marked the first public platform where the PDP Chairman reacted to the Governor’s exit and the defection of many PDP ward chairmen to the APC. Governor Umo Eno, however, chose not to engage directly with Akpan’s assertion. Instead, he used the moment to debunk rumours of a fractured relationship with his predecessor and political mentor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel. “My relationship with my boss, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, is intact,” the Governor declared, indi...
