UKANAFUN TIMBER MARKET: LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL'S OVERSIGHT VISIT AIMS TO ENHANCE TIMBER MARKET EFFICIENCY IN THE LGA
The Delegation from Ukanafun legislative council, was received by the President of Ukanafun Timber Market Association, Elder Aniekan Ido, and members as Timber Merchants and producers across the LGA all gathered.
While on the visit to the market, the legislative council look out for the following areas of improvements and findings reveal thus;
Infrastructure and Facilities as well as Market layout and organization :
The council discovered that the market is well-organized, with clear sections were marked out for different types of timber and products
Storage facilities in the market:
The Lawmakers noted that there are inadequate storage facilities for timber and other products, and the few ones are well-maintained by the traders though there's need for government support in this area.
Roads and accessibility:
The roads leading to and within the market are in average condition, and the market is accessible to people even with disabilities.
Waste management:
There is no proper waste management system in place, and the market needs waste disposal facilities, including toilets that are adequate to avoid pollution and the delegation promised to look into that.
Disaster and emergency management:
There is no adequate fire safety measures in place, such as fire extinguishers and emergency exit routes.
Speaking on behalf of the timber Merchants and Producers, Elder Aniekan Ido, ( The President of Ukanafun Timber Market Association), acknowledged the Executive Chairman of Ukanafun Local Government Area, Hon. Prince Uyo Ukpanah, and the Lawmakers for including Ukanafun timber market in its sustainable development agenda. In his words " we are very happy to host you today and we promise to support your government in our capacity as a government of inclusivity".
Responding on behalf of the Legislative Council, Hon. Pst. Emmanuel Akpan, Chairman House Committee on Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency, says he is impressed by the infrastructural rebirth in the timber market, and promise to install solar Water in the timber market with modern Toiletas well as provisions of Waste Baskets to keep the timber environment clean.
